What does the verb hurl in this verse tell you about Satan’s attitude towards you?

According to Noah Webster, to “hurl” is “to throw with violence; to drive with great force” (American Dictionary). Once a person realizes the nature of the devil, is it possible that person might be less likely to follow him? How might you explain why some people follow him anyway? Why is it preferable to desire the Savior’s tender mercies?
