The peace and prosperity was short-lived. Just as the Book of Mormon teaches continuously of prosperity when the gospel is lived, it also warns repeatedly of pride that usually comes because of those riches (see Jacob 2:13; Alma 4:6; D&C 38:39). Pride led to murders (Helaman 6:15) and the resurgence of the Gadianton robbers and murderers (vv. 17–18). These verses remind us of the death of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and the attempt on the life of Ronald Reagan.
