“Ye Must Build Your Sure Foundation Upon the Rock Who is Christ”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

One of the most powerful promises in the Book of Mormon is that Christ, the Redeemer, God’s own Son, is our rock, a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if we build we cannot fall. That is wonderful wording: if we center our lives on the rock, they cannot fall apart. It is true. If our lives are founded solidly on the Redeemer, when the mighty winds, whirlwind, hail, and storms beat on us—the temptations and trials of life—our lives cannot fall apart (see also commentary at 1 Nephi 15:24 and 3 Nephi 14:24–27; D&C 50:44).

The promise does not say we may not fall, or we probably won’t fall; it says we cannot fall if our lives are founded solidly on him. The devil will try to “drag you down,” or as we say, “beat you up,” but when our lives are centered on Christ, the devil will have “no power” over us.
