“He Hath Power Given Unto Him from the Father”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet
The power given to the Savior to “redeem them from their sins because of repentance” was in the seed of immortality that Jesus had by virtue of being the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh. His divine nature and his life of sinlessness empowered him to bring about the Atonement. This power is an essential difference between Christ and man. This power was absolutely necessary in order for the infinite and eternal sacrifice to be made. It could not be a sacrifice of a man, but rather must be the sacrifice of a God. Abinadi explained that “God himself shall come down among the children of men, and shall redeem his people” (Mosiah 15:1-3).
