“Did Prophesy Many Things Unto Them Concerning Their Iniquities, and What Should Come Unto Them if They Did Not Repent”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet
Nephi and Lehi, sons of Helaman, are fulfilling their role as prophets. They are not merely predicting impending doom upon the Nephites but rather are speaking forthrightly concerning conditions they observed and, as prophets, are declaring repentance. A prophet is a “forthteller” and “preacher of righteousness.” It is clear from this passage and numerous others that to prophesy concerning iniquity is to (1) proclaim the mind and will of God by teaching the requirement of true gospel living; and (2) plainly teach the consequences of sin (see Alma 37:32-34).
