Here we have two instances in the original text where the verb retain has the meaning ‘take back’. Early 20th-century LDS editions made the change to regain, the 1920 edition
for the one in verse 9 and the 1906 large-print edition for the one in verse 10. As explained under Alma 58:3, the critical text will restore the original verb retain whenever it is
supported by the earliest textual sources.
