Through the wise and experienced perspective of the prophet/historian Mormon, we are presented a panoramic vista of vast opposing forces—the steady, inexorable thrust forward of the spiritual force of divine power as contrasted with the halting, stumbling, corrupting, enticing and often irrepressible force of mortal pride. There is no doubt about the final outcome, for “the works, and the designs, and the purposes of God cannot be frustrated, neither can they come to naught” (D&C 3:1). But what painful lessons mortals must learn before we can proclaim defeat over the seeds of pride and rebellion constantly germinating within our souls: “And thus we may see” is Mormon’s editorial signature for introducing his readers to the obvious truth that only faith, repentance, and compliance with all of the Lord’s commandments alone can eradicate pride from our lives and prepare us to receive the blessings of the Spirit.
