“Many People Went Forth into the Land Northward”

Brant Gardner

In addition to the three ship voyages and the departure of the group of five thousand (v. 4), Mormon adds that “many people” went into the land northward. Possibly their long residence in the land of Zarahemla (two hundred years since Mosiah1’s arrival) had raised the population to a level that made expansion logical. However, the deaths of so many men in war suggests that other factors must also have been at work, since a population dip should have followed the wars. Nevertheless, we have two important facts. There were movements of populations to the north and Mormon made sure to include them in his record, even though he tells us nothing of those people after their departure.
