Hagoth, the shipbuilder, was an exceedingly “curious” man. We might think that means he was inquisitive or strange or adventurous, but curious or curiousness in Joseph Smith’s day when the Book of Mormon was translated into English meant “made with care,” “wrought with care and art,” “elegant,” “exactness of workmanship,”68 so Hagoth himself, and the ships he built, were apparently careful, elegant, exact, and precise. Compare “curious workmen” mentioned in Helaman 6:11 and the “ball of curious workmanship” mentioned in 1 Nephi 16:10.
