Redaction: One of the subthemes that Mormon presses is the economic advantage of living the gospel. Matters did not simply return to normal but to prosperity. The foundational promise of the Nephites was: “Inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall prosper in the land; but inasmuch as ye will not keep my commandments ye shall be cut off from my presence” (2 Ne. 1:20; see also negative phrasing in Omni 1:6).
The resolution of the wars demonstrated that Yahweh had protected the people, but Mormon stresses that Yahweh also kept his promise that they would prosper. Mormon has stressed this theme several times (Alma 1:29, 4:6, 9:22, 50:17–20). Here they repent and join the church—clearly meeting the definition of righteousness. Mormon wants his readers to understand that Yahweh saw their efforts and fulfilled his promise.
