"King-men and Freemen"

Brant Gardner

Culture: From Mosiah2 to this point in Nephite history, the people have either been religiously united or separated into two factions: church-men and non-church-men. But now there are freemen and king-men. These named factions represent a significant step in Nephite social development. The factions are sufficiently large and cohesive that they can not only be named but be named in opposition to each other—opposition so severe that civil war is the next step. This is an absolute opposition of political, social, and religious worldviews. The dispute is so fundamental that mediation will not work. One side must win, and the other lose.
