“The Greatness of the Number of His People Determined Amalickiah to Overpower the Nephites”

Brant Gardner

As king of the Lamanites, Amalickiah had influence in all of the cities in Nephi’s polity. The army he could raise was far larger than that which could be expected from a single city. When the Aztec monarch raised an army in the 1500s from the several cities of the Tetzcocas, Aztecs, and Chichimecs, it reportedly numbered 700,000 men. Amalickiah’s army was probably smaller; the Aztec empire was later and more densely populated. However, it would not be surprising if as a guess, this combined army reached 100,000 men.
