How much did the Lamanites understand about Amalickiah’s cunning?

Thomas R. Valletta

“[Amalickiah] ‘did stir up the Lamanites to anger against the people of Nephi,’ to such a degree that the Lamanite king ordered a general mobilization for war (Alma 47:1). Such an order to a people who had just had their fill of war was coolly received, and most of the people refused to obey it (Alma 47:2) and organized a huge protest-meeting at the marshalling area at Onidah, electing a king for themselves on a no-war platform (Alma 47:5–6). … The fact that … [Lehonti] had to be urged four times before he would risk a secret meeting with Amalickiah shows that the latter already had something of a reputation as a smooth operator” (Nibley, Since Cumorah, 305).
