Captain Moroni’s foreknowledge of Amalickiah stirring up the Lamanites (Alma 46:30) came to pass (Alma 47:1). Another uninspired principle of leadership is revealed by Amalickiah, his plan to dethrone the Lamanite king (v. 4). This power incentive is known today as “a hidden agenda,” or one’s “own agenda” that is secretly carried out. As far as this world goes, it originated with Satan. “For thou hast said in thy heart: I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High” (2 Nephi 24:13–14; Isaiah 14:13–14). Anyone who follows the power incentive principle “seeketh to become a law unto itself,” a trait of those who become sons of perdition (D&C88:35; see also vv. 32–34). The fearful Lamanites were the victims of the subtle and evil Amalickiah.
