What was Moroni teaching by referring to Joseph’s coat?

Thomas R. Valletta

Moroni spoke of “an incident in the life of Joseph of Egypt which has been lost to the Bible record. He told them that as Joseph’s coat had been rent into many pieces by his brothers in their bitterness, so his people would be rent by their dissenting brothers if they were not true to their covenant. Moroni then said that Jacob had prophesied before his death using the remnants of Joseph’s coat as a type. Jacob noted that part of what had been brought him had decayed, while part of it had been preserved, and he prophesied that part of the seed or remnant of Joseph would likewise be destroyed, while part would be preserved” (McConkie, Gospel Symbolism, 172).
