Critics of the Book of Mormon point out that the original wording in this verse—“waving the rent”—does not include the word part. Since a rent is the hole, not the piece torn from the cloth, and one cannot write on a hole, they claim that the book is in error. They charge that “part” was later added for deception. However, Hebrew scholar John A. Tvedtnes explained that “Hebrew does not have to add the word part to a verbal substantive like rent as English requires. … In the verse … rent would mean rent thing or rent part” (“Hebrew Background,” 78).
