The correct spelling for this name is Amalickiah, extant in 𝓞 and written without variation two times earlier in this chapter, in verses 3–4 (the first two occurrences of the name in the text). The common misspelling Ameleckiah is the result of Joseph Smith pronouncing the name with stress on the first syllable (rather than on the second syllable, the English pronunciation used today). Because of Joseph’s pronunciation, Oliver Cowdery never misspelled the initial a in the name, but he did tend to write the second and third vowels as e. Sometimes Oliver corrected his error, as here in verse 5 (the third occurrence of the name in the text); sometimes he did not.
