“The Extreme Hatred of the Lamanites Towards the People of Ammon”

Brant Gardner

The people of Ammon were heroes to the Nephites but would be seen as traitors to the Lamanites for rejecting their former religion and political allegiance. It was an Amalekite-led revolution that drove out the people of Anti-Nephi-Lehi (Alma 24:1–2), confirming political rivalry. The Anti-Nephi-Lehies included a previous Lamanite king (Lamoni’s brother, Anti-Nephi-Lehi) and, therefore, a legitimate ruling lineage. This situation is dangerous in all kingdoms. The possibility of a legitimate rival claimant was a risk most often resolved through murdering the claimant. Removing this possible rival would be another motive for the Amalekites to destroy the people of Ammon.
