Notwithstanding God's mercy and His long-suffering, the wicked have no place in His Kingdom. Their deeds while on Earth were evil, therefore, they "have no part nor portion" of His Spirit with them. They prefer darkness to light in the hope that their actions are obscured; their hope is in vain because darkness does not abide where God lives. "They are unclean," Alma noted, "and no unclean thing can inherit the Kingdom of God. They are cast out, and consigned to partake of the fruits of their labors or their works, which have been evil; and they drink the dregs of a bitter cup."
