Alma returns to the theme of self-control and temperance, an essential quality when working with others and preaching the gospel (as Alma commands Shiblon to do). Boldness in declaring the gospel must not become overbearing. The result of bridling passions will be that we can be filled with love, which suggests that it is anger or the “darker” passions that we need to bridle. There is no suggestion that we need bridle our love for our fellow human beings; indeed, bridling the darker passions will allow that love to expand.
Alma also exhorts Shiblon to refrain from “idleness.” If we are following God’s path, we cannot “walk” while standing still, and idleness indicates a lack of action or movement.
