The Counsel of Alma to His Son Shiblon

Daniel H. Ludlow

Although Alma’s counsel to his son Shiblon occupies only one brief chapter in the Book of Mormon, yet it is filled with good advice for young people of all times and places. Among other things, Alma counsels Shiblon (and, indirectly, all of us): (1) to “learn wisdom … that there is no other way or means whereby man can be saved, only in and through Christ”; (2) to teach the word of God; (3) to “be diligent and temperate in all things”; (4) to be humble—not to boast of wisdom or strength; (5) to “use boldness, but not overbearance”; (6) to bridle the passions; (7) to refrain from idleness; (8) to pray with sincerity of heart and not “to be heard of men”; (9) to acknowledge unworthiness before God and to ask him for forgiveness of sin.
