All three of the above verses are precepts that are applicable to the reader, as noted in the beginning of the chapter. Alma is probably trying to keep Helaman from making the same mistakes he had made in his youth (v. 35). Every parent hopes to help his child avoid mistakes he or she had made. Remember that Alma told Helaman of his rebirth experience a few minutes before. The next verse could be related to setting goals (v. 36). If our doings (actions) and our thoughts are directed toward the Lord, we will be less likely to make mistakes. Nightly and morning prayers (v. 37) are the foundation for keeping our actions and thoughts in the right direction.
