“That I May Discover… Their Secret Works, Their Works of Darkness”
Here the word discover seems to mean “reveal.” The Lord makes available seeric abilities and implements so that his servants may know of the evil abroad in the land among the ungodly. Early in the history of the restored Church the Lord explained to Oliver Cowdery that the gift of revelation had been bestowed upon him for a purpose: “Blessed art thou, for it [the gift of revelation] shall deliver you out of the hands of your enemies, when, if it were not so, they would slay you and bring your soul to destruction” (D&C 8:4).
