How were the brass plates to be “handed down from one generation to another”?

Thomas R. Valletta

“The brass plates … were the scriptures of the Nephites, and we suppose that multiple copies were made by the Nephites in order that all the people might have access to the written word of the Lord. At least a portion of this sacred record shall go to all the world through the dissemination of the Book of Mormon. … Eventually, however, this prophecy shall be fulfilled in a day yet future … when God raises up, through his appointed channels, a prophet, seer, and revelator, who will also be a translator” (McConkie and Millet, Doctrinal Commentary, 3:272–73).
