Alma is racked with pain, remembers and calls upon Yahweh-Messiah, and is instantly forgiven. He could “remember my pains no more.” We should not, however, assume that the mere act of calling on Yahweh-Messiah constitutes salvation from sin. Forgiveness is not the same as salvation or exaltation. Alma’s sins were certainly forgiven, and he was definitely released from the chains in which those sins had bound him. But this process gives Alma a new start, not a completion. Alma must do what all must do after we are baptized: move forward on the gospel path; learn to do and be what it requires of us.
