Amulek, the new convert-turned-prophet, teaches great wisdom to live by: “Work out your salvation with fear [reverence] before God”; “contend no more against the Holy Ghost”; “take upon you the name of Christ”; “humble yourselves even to the dust”; “live in thanksgiving daily”; “be watchful unto prayer continually”; “bear with [patience] all manner of afflictions.” Then, a happy promise is assured: “Ye shall one day rest from all your afflictions.”
Patience in the face of affliction is a hallmark of faith, meekness, and true discipleship. On one occasion the Lord said to Joseph Smith, “Be patient in afflictions, for thou shalt have many; but endure them, for, lo, I am with thee, even unto the end of thy days” (D&C 24:8). On another occasion he said, “Be patient in afflictions, revile not against those that revile. Govern your house in meekness, and be steadfast” (D&C 31:9). Such instructions are important keys to a life well lived.
