“Work out Your Own Salvation”

Monte S. Nyman

Based upon the testimony he had just borne, Amulek summarized his message and admonished the Zoramites to do several things. Most of these things have been discussed previously or need no further explanation. A list follows with cross references to biblical similarities, previous discussions, or need no further explanation.

  1. Work out your own salvation with fear before God (v. 37).
“Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12).
  2. No more deny the coming of Christ (v. 37, see Alma 34:5 discussion).
  3. Contend no more against the Holy Ghost, but receive it, and take upon you the name of Christ (v. 38). To contend with the Holy Ghost is to argue with or refuse to follow its promptings. To take his name (v. 38), is explained in Mosiah 5:9–14.
  4. Worship God in whatever place you be in (v. 38; see Alma 33:4–11). “In spirit and in truth” see JST, John 4:24).
  5. Live in thanksgiving daily (v. 38; see Mosiah 4:11).
  6. Be watchful unto prayer continually (v. 39; see Alma 34: 17–27).
  7. Be not led away by the devil and be overpowered (v. 39; see Alma 34:34–35).
  8. Be patient and bear all manner of afflictions (vv. 40–41; see Alma 38:3–5).
