“That Great and Last Sacrifice Will Be the Son of God”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

Sacrifice began with Adam as an ordinance of the gospel and continued under the preparatory gospel (the law of Moses). All the hundreds of thousands of sacrifices on temple altars over the centuries pointed to the great and last sacrifice of the Son of God himself. The twenty-four-hour period that included Gethsemane and Golgotha was the Day of Atonement.
