After Alma finished his talk, Amulek stood up to bear his testimony. This was no ordinary preacher. Amulek was the former rich and wicked citizen of Ammonihah who had been administered to by an angel and had then been taught the gospel by Alma. Since then Amulek had been the faithful missionary companion of Alma and suffered persecution right along with him. It will be recalled that Amulek had been starved and tortured along with Alma in the prison of Ammonihah. Finally when the chief judges, the rulers, the teachers, the priests and all the dignitaries of the city had tortured and abused these two men almost beyond all endurance, Alma called out upon God. Suddenly there was a loud clap of thunder and the whole huge stone prison crashed to the ground.
Those who had gratified their sadistic hatred by torturing the servants of God suddenly had the breath of life crushed out of them as they fell beneath the huge, monolithic stones. Only Alma and Amulek came out of the wreckage alive. What a miracle! Of course, that had all happened eight years earlier, but we mention it here so it will be appreciated that Amulek was a miracle survivor of that previous persecution. He had become one of Alma’s closest personal friends and a seasoned exponent of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Now, to these Zoramite apostates, he declared:
“My brethren, I think that it is impossible that ye should be ignorant of the things which have been spoken concerning the coming of Christ, who is taught by us to be the Son of God; yea, I know that these things were taught unto you bountifully before your dissension from among us.”
“Amulek Arose and Began to Teach Them”
