We learn to nourish the word of God within us by allowing it to take root and expand within our soul. We must be sure our heart is right: humble and easily entreated, so that we can nurture the word. The Lord promised: “and the scriptures shall be given, even as they are in mine own bosom, to the salvation of mine own elect” (D&C 35:20). The word flows from His bosom into our own bosom, through the Spirit, to take root and grow, that we might become the elect of God. Alma teaches that if we nourish the word with faith, diligence, and patience, we will eventually partake of its precious fruit: happiness, the love of God, and eternal life (see 1 Nephi 8:10; 11:25; 15:36). Let us do all we can to exercise our faith in the word by believing, allowing our faith to move us to action, and receiving the power of faith in our lives with all diligence (working with all our heart, might, mind, and strength)—and then patiently waiting for the word to yield its precious fruit according to the will of God.
