“If So, Blessed Are Ye”

Brant Gardner

By saying “if so,” Alma is not expressing doubt about the people’s humility but emphasizing that their humility will bring a blessing. The sentence is perhaps better rephrased; “I behold that ye are lowly in heart, and as such, then blessed are ye.” Otherwise, the phrase seems to have Alma doubting his declaration of his perception of the people.
