Alma mobilizes a small religious “army” for this particular battle. He had embarked on his first missionary tour alone. This time he brings spiritually powerful allies: the sons of Mosiah, Amulek, the converted Zeezrom, and two of his own sons. Zeezrom’s presence is significant. We first met him in Ammonihah as the lawyer who contended with Alma and Amulek but was converted and, from the time of his baptism, taught the gospel (Alma 15:10–12). He must have become not only faithful but powerful in testimony. Alma may want this particular group, not only for their gospel strength, but also for their past outside it. Other than his sons, the other companions had espoused apostate ideas at some point in their lives. Amulek is a possible exception, but he had lived in a Nehorite city and had admitted to a less-diligent period as well (Alma 10:5–6).
