“They Durst Not Make Use of That Which Is Their Own”

Brant Gardner

This is an expansion of the accusation of priestcraft. When Korihor says that “they durst not make use of that which is their own,” he is saying that the people must give up their own goods for the support of the priests. They cannot use their own things because they must be given over to the priests. Once again, Korihor suggests that this becomes particularly onerous because it has no benefit. There is no God, so these people give up their own things to someone else and get nothing of value in return.
