“From the Pains of Hell”
They are loosed from the pains of hell, here and hereafter. Many suffer hell on earth in the sense that they are smitten by conscience, tormented by a damned soul that cannot find happiness in sin. Of necessity, those who die under the bondage of sin are consigned hereafter to that portion of the spirit world referred to in the Book of Mormon as hell, where they must pay for their sins. Here “there shall be weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth, and this because of their own iniquity, being led captive by the will of the devil” (Alma 40:13). Thus, as Ammon states, this great host of Lamanite converts have escaped the “pains of hell,” as do all who repent, are baptized, and continue in faith. See commentary on Alma 42:12-14.
