The Book of Mormon has many stories of recent converts becoming great missionaries. Lamoni, Amulek, and even Zeezrom become great instruments in the hand of the Lord. Lamoni's ability to teach his people is key. The Lamanites are naturally suspicious of the Nephites and they are much less likely to listen to Ammon without the testimony of someone they trust. Lamoni provides that much needed second witness.
