“Free from the Oppressions of the King, His Father”

Brant Gardner

Culture: Lamoni’s declaration of his people’s freedom provides an important insight into Lamanite politics. First, the very fact that Lamoni was a king subject to a higher king rings true as a characteristic of Mesoamerica culture. Second, Lamoni tells his people that they are “free from the oppressions” of the over-king. From what are they freed? Mostly likely from their responsibility to provide tribute. Because tribute came from the people’s labor, it is easy to understand how it might be seen as oppressive to be required to send part of their produce to another city, receiving no goods in exchange.
