This famous statement from Lamoni—“in the strength of the Lord thou canst do all things”—shows the king’s unshakable faith in Ammon and in the power of the Lord. But it also shows that the king is a practical and resourceful person. He conceives a strategy to help liberate Ammon’s brethren by using his political clout in appealing to his friend at Middoni, the king of the land, for help in accomplishing the objective. Thus “the strength of the Lord” also encompasses all we can do through our own best efforts. We can pray for and depend upon the strength of the Lord, but at the same time we must do all in our power to reach our objectives. It is the Lord who directs Ammon to Middoni. It will be the Lord who blesses the process of liberation. And it will be Lamoni who contributes his best talents and connections to ensure that the job is done.
