Ammon cannot answer this question either “yes” or “no” without interjecting confusion because of Lamoni’s simple categories. He therefore repeats “I am a man” and then, in giving an overview of the plan of life, explains how human beings fit into that plan. Because he introduces the Holy Spirit, he apparently assumes that Lamoni already knows, or can easily understand, this Spirit. As a probable polytheist, Lamoni may have simply accepted the Holy Spirit as another deity of lesser rank, or possibly a powerful way or spirit companion. Ammon explains that his power comes through Holy Spirit, who is associated both with him as a man, and with Yahweh. As a result of this association, Ammon has “knowledge, and also power, according to my faith and desires which are in God.”
