Ammon’s fearless defense of the re-gathered flocks against the overwhelming odds of many men, as shown by the number that were slain, was based upon the promise given to King Mosiah that the Lord would “deliver thy sons out of the hands of the Lamanites” (Mosiah 28:7). It also shows Ammon’s faith in that promise, and a further example of the fourth requirement for being an effective missionary— to follow the individual promises and blessings given (see Alma 17:18).
