Ammon sought to win the hearts of his Lamanite guards by showing forth the power of God in preserving the flocks of the king (see Alma 17:29–39). In missionary work, people must know we care before they will listen to our teachings. The old cliché is true: “I don’t care about how much you know until I know how much you care.” This was exemplified in the letters new converts would write me. I would ask them to tell me of their conversion. They would reply, “I felt the love of the missionaries so much I had to listen to what they were teaching. While listening I felt the Spirit and I knew the gospel was true and I wanted to be baptized.” (Ed J. Pinegar)
