“Preparation to Teach And Preach”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

Alma 17:2–3 is the basic formula for preparing to teach and preach as a missionary.

Be “in the Lord”—by following our Savior and keeping His commandments.

Wax strong “in the knowledge of the truth.”

Be of a “sound understanding.”

Search the scriptures “diligently” to know the word of God.

Pray and fast.

The reward is to have the Spirit of prophecy and revelation so that we will teach with the power and authority of God. Missionaries who are prepared to serve and willing to work hard—being exactly, immediately, and courageously obedient—will always enjoy the Spirit on their missions and have greater success in working with the people (see Alma 19:35–36).

Pure motives help bring souls to repentance: “Therefore, this was the cause for which the sons of Mosiah had undertaken the work, that perhaps they might bring them unto repentance; that perhaps they might bring them to know of the plan of redemption” (Alma 17:16.). They truly cared about the people (see Mosiah 28:3).
