“There were apparently no Levites among the Nephites. The Nephites were of Joseph and apparently didn’t have any Aaronites or Levites, who would have been natural heirs to the Aaronic Priesthood. However, they obeyed the law of Moses. Therefore, we conclude that because the Nephites had the Melchizedek Priesthood, they could do everything the Aaronic Priesthood could do. Since the Aaronic Priesthood was limited to the sons of Aaron, the Nephites could not have functioned in the law of Moses unless they had had the Melchizedek Priesthood” (Selected Writings of Robert J. Matthews, 189).
