Whenever the work of the Lord is succeeding “[Satan] stirreth up [other people’s] hearts to anger against this work” (D&C 10:24; see also 2 Nephi 28:20). Wherefore, when the people began to believe Alma’s words (Alma 14:1), Satan went to work. The spirit of contention, in which the more part of the people engaged (vv. 2–3), was also “of the devil, who is the father of contention” (3 Nephi 11:29). The accusation that Alma and Amulek had lied (Alma 14:2, 5) was the real lie. Satan is also “the father of all lies” (Moses 4:4).
