EVIDENCE: Tenfold Repetitions (Mosiah 2–5; 2 Nephi 4:16–35; Alma 12–13; Alma 31:26–35; Alma 33:4–11)

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

Interestingly, the name of the Lord is mentioned ten times in King Benjamin’s speech in the book of Mosiah—seven times as Lord God and three as Lord Omnipotent. In addition, the word Lord also appears ten times in the psalm of Nephi, and the words Lord and Son are each mentioned ten times in Alma’s powerful speech found in Alma 12–13. Furthermore, the phrase O Lord is found ten times in Alma’s prayer in Antionum, while the poem of Zenos quoted by Alma (see Alma 33) contains ten uses of the word hear. Though we do not know for certain, it would seem that these tenfold occurrences might relate to the Israelites’ reverence for the Ten Commandments. It is doubtful that Joseph Smith noticed the tenfold repetitions in the Book of Mormon, and even more unlikely that anyone in 1829 would have sensed the important place of the number ten in ancient minds.
