Those charged with proclaiming the gospel message are to be sensitive to the Spirit, discerning enough to recognize that “portion of [God’s] word” suited to those being taught. Full-time missionaries, for example, are given a specific commission to teach that portion of the word necessary to introduce sincere investigators to the message of the Restoration. They are not commissioned to teach doctrines that could be more easily understood and appreciated after baptism and the reception of the Holy Ghost.
Their specific assignment is to “declare glad tidings,” the tidings that the Lord has spoken anew, in our day through modern prophets (see D&C 19:29; D&C 31:3-4), and to proclaim that the truthfulness of the message may be tested through the Book of Mormon. We are to teach those outside the Church how to get into the Church and thereafter allow the Holy Ghost to teach the fulness of the gospel (D&C 39:6; see also D&C 71:1).
