What can we learn about the use of the word subtle?

Thomas R. Valletta

“The word subtle is used several times in the scriptures to describe something that is deceptive, elusive, shadowy, ingenious, clever, cunning, sly, tricky, or crafty (see, for example, Alma 47:4; D&C 123:12). All these terms characterize the evil one whose constant effort is to entrap, ensnare, overpower, and destroy the souls of men and the work of God” (Ogden and Skinner, Book of Mormon, 1:410).
