“Zeezrom Began to Question Amulek”

Monte S. Nyman

Amulek’s reply to Zeezrom, to answer only “according to the Spirit of the Lord” (v. 22), was probably an attribute and a blessing he had learned from many days with Alma (see Alma 8:27; 10:10–11). He had learned what to answer as well as when to answer.

The onti was as great as the sum of all the other pieces or larger denominations of their monetary system (Alma 11:13). Thus, six onties were “of great worth” (v. 25). The accusation that Zeezrom loved “that lucre more than [God]” (v. 24) is the sin that Paul and Peter warned the New Testament saints against (see 1 Timothy 3:3–8; Titus 1:7, 11; 1 Peter 5:2). In his abridgement of the book of Mosiah, Mormon calls it “that lucre which doth corrupt the soul.” (Mosiah 29:40). Amulek’s discernment of Zeezrom’s thoughts and intents (Alma 11:25) is another gift of the Spirit that he had recently learned.
