Why did the hardened people of Ammonihah suddenly become astonished?

“Amulek established himself as a witness by stating his genealogy and economic status in the community (Alma 10:2–4) and then proceeded to stand as a second witness in support of Alma” (Largey, Book of Mormon Reference Companion, 786–87).

These wicked Nephites were determined to destroy the faith of these missionaries, but the fact that “there was more than one witness” was a shock to them. Why does this help explain one reason we send missionaries out two by two?
