The Ammonihahites’ reaction confirms the importance of Amulek’s calling as Alma’s companion. Having two witnesses apparently validated the message in ways that may seem obscure to us. It may be a legal or traditional understanding, perhaps related to the Deuteronomic law of witnesses (Deut. 19:15). Had they perceived it as a witness by the Spirit, they could have understood Alma’s message as he first delivered it. It was therefore either part of their law or social tradition that two corroborating witnesses would substantiate the truth. Yahweh gave them exactly what they needed in their cultural framework to understand the message. Therefore, they alone bear responsibility for choosing not to listen.
