In purely technical terms, Alma conflated the coming of the Atoning Messiah with the coming of the Triumphant Messiah. The final judgment of humankind does not occur until that final closing scene. Alma is correct, however, that even before that ultimate scene of judgment the consequences of our life choices will fall upon us. The Messiah’s mission is to provide the means of repentance whereby any life that sees the vision of Yahweh’s message may turn to him and turn away from the “power and captivation of the devil.”
